Re: What are you working on now?
My first project was with Dow, polished anodized aluminium with the gold track masked when the black was applied, but aluminium.. Also the 'SWISS MADE' was slightly too big - easy tell to know one of our dials
Second was with Gordon, brass plate properly stamped, but painted and with track painted. This means you get a slight bump due to the track paint thickness, the gen is flat.
Working on this one with John the new laser guy. 0.5mm brass, like gen, deep recesses. Not painted, it is a brass blackening process, then the black is etched off to reveal the brass underneath, so it is flat like gen. Then lacquer.
Need to work to get the track more polished, and better lacquer. The indices are white paint filled and then lumed, need to build it up a bit more, but is getting there..

Superb job! Will this be a one-of-a-kind dial?south105323 wrote: ↑January 2nd, 2024, 7:54 am Cali prototype.jpg

Great job! Controlling the etching time a desired depth can be achieved.south105323 wrote: ↑January 2nd, 2024, 7:54 am New Cali dial.

Re: What are you working on now?
Need to get a slightly satin lacquer but one that is really flat with no texture. There should be almost no step up or down for the track (from pictures I've seen). This makes sense when you read about how gilt dials were made, the brass was polished and then masked before blacking covered everything except the masked areas. One of the reasons we are experimenting with blacking rather than paint is that it is a really thin, even layer, so the etching can be controlled to just go through the black. It give a really deep vintage look as well, dark grey to black depending on how the light catches it.
Another thing - where does the puffy lume above the surface come from? Most good condition ones I've seen photos of have the lume flush, or even slightly concave. Did the puffy lume above the surface come from a relume where they just laid it on top? I've done both in the past, easy enough to build it up..
I'm also experimenting with different size lume as it doesn't look that smooth, 50 and 10 micron lume mixed seems to give a good look...

Very promising results. Perhaps we can get you and John to do a run of Rlx gilt dials later
