If it wasn’t for cannabis and Alan Watts lectures I would never get a bent hairspring sorted properly. Most recently was a 90 year old Breguet overcoil, thankfully I had another to compare it to. It was badly out of shape because some idiot (me) spazzed out on reassembly

I didn’t take a before picture, but after an hour it was almost back in order

And finally, working again

A few years ago, I watched an old watchmaker in my town, completely straighten a crumpled hairspring and wind it again.. He had templates on paper of how the last winding should look.. And very quickly.. Old school.. I spent a couple of hours with him.. Progress. . It's there.. At least I'm not afraid of hairspring anymore.. Two tweezers (Dumont, No. 4, 5) , a magnifying glass, and all the time in the world.. If it doesn't go open the drawer and look for another one..

That’s a great plan! I wonder if the parts houses have those templates available. I read about a homemade hairspring tool, still need to make one. You take a sewing needle, trim off the edge of the eye so it’s a tiny fork. Then polish the ends of the fork smooth and insert the needle end into peg wood and you’ve got a perfect hairspring tool. I should try making one of those today.

That looks really cool, I can’t wait to see the end result!

Another option, if you can find one in the right size is to use a bubble crystal:
