Hi

Does anyone know a source for solid gold 6497 or 6498 watch cases?

I noticed that Tourby has some, does anyone know his source or if he would sell them individually??

Many thanks
Ben

You can ask a jeweller to cast one in gold. Using a stainless steel case to get a casting mould first.

Oh good idea!

Though I remember seeing a YT video with Roger Smith making a gold case and he didnt cast it, he shaped and welded from gold rods.
Would cast gold be less strong than extruded and shaped?

That is something that I am not completely sure about.

I asked once to a friend of mine who is a jeweller and told me that it would cost around 500€ or so.

If you need it, I can share a 3D file with the model of a 3646 case set. I was told by the same person that sometimes they can use that to generate the mould.

Was the 500€ the cost for the jeweller to cast the case (so the cost of the gold was not included)?
Seems awfully cheap otherwise!

Also does anyone have an idea about how much gold in grams would be required to cast a case? i weighed my PO and with bracelet and movement it was less than 200g, so maybe 100g or less.. does that sound right to you?

I am not 100% sure but 18 K gold weights about2.5- 3 times as stainless steel. So if steel weights about 100 grams then about 270 grams is weight in gold.Roughly.
You can find charts like this so compare weight http://www.coyotesteel.com/assets/img/P ... icfoot.pdf

The program I use can tell you the mass of any kind of metal planed to represent the model.

Let me check that.

And yes, it was 500 for the midcase (and maybe bezel and CB, I can't remember it well)

Data extracted from the CAD program:

Mid case only:

Area 2625.297 mm^2
Density 0.019 g / mm^3
Mass 51.45 g
Volume 2665.996 mm^3
Physical Material Gold

And each wire is 2g

Thanks very much for the info

The 3646 is too big for my wrists, but there are some cases on AliExpress that I like the look of so I will reach out to jewellers in the area to get working on a cast!

I'll keep you all updated!
