Best deal ever! £19 from eBay and there is a gem inside.

I gave up hunting SF240 for a long time, since I feel like my luck never comes close. I ended up brought the cheapest stem-wind 240 from eBay, with cost me £250 to buy and another £250 for parts to repair it.

Last week I got this bid for the trench watch movements, which nobody was bidding. There is an unassuming alarm clock movement in the picture but I don’t even looking it when I place the bid.

Turns out it’s a SF240 / non-alarm / stem wind, best of the kind. I literally cry when I opened the back and see the thing inside.

So, I think my second 8 day build is on schedule now.

Oh hell yeah!! That is an amazing score! Sterile plates, I wonder what it was in originally? Maybe one of the big ship wheel clock/calendar/barometer rigs? I got my hand-wind SF20 in a similar lot and like you, the 240 wasn’t even mentioned in the listing. Love it when that happens!

Also, word of caution: those lume plots on the dial are very likely radium, so it would be best to keep the dial (and other hands and dials from that lot in ziplock bags in an airtight container. And make sure to wash your hands and clean your workspace after working on them. I’m not sure how much radium exposure it takes to cause trouble, but that stuff stays dangerous forever.
