How do you patina brass hands?

Post by rustyscoot »

Hi all, I’m having a hard time getting my hands to patina. Does anybody have any tips please?

They’re raw brass.

Vinegar and salt is doing nothing!

Thanks.

Most likely the hands are gold plated if vinegar and salt don't work. To be 100% sure try a boiled egg trick - http://homage-forum.com/viewtopic.php?t=3161

Otherwise you'll have to strip the gold layer to bare a brass.

Thanks for the liver of sulphur and brass black tips. Even the eggs did nothing! I sanded the hands a bit too in case there was a lacquer or plating, but nothing.

They still look mint!!

Must be some high grade brass!!

To sand-a-bit is not enough. Usually, generic plated hands have minimum 2 coating layers, for instance, nickel and gold. Sometimes there might be a layer of clear lacquer, yes. So it needs pretty thorough sanding.
